Internships at EMC vary greatly depending on who your boss is. Most interns are related to someone, but many of them are still really hard working, and at least some are hired from the outside as well. Some bosses know ideal projects to give interns, that are interesting and useful... and sometimes you might be surfing the internet alone for a couple days because your boss is away or doesn't have anything for you.
EMC is the kind of place where you are given work, and it's assumed you'll get it done--- if you need to take a break to grab coffee, that's fine-- but you might be working through lunch other times.
They are in the midst of creating an internal web 2.0 social network, which helped the social life of the interns... somewhat. There have been a few hiccups in the process, but I'm confident that things will be better by next summer.
