Comments:
I worked for the engine performance & emissions. During the course of the summer, I was responsible for conducting local emissions development test to study the interactions between the injection timing parameters. Eventually I had to come up with a recommendation of how to improve the emissions without suffering too much on the fuel consumption.
I learned a great deal about how a locomotive engine works, which I really enjoyed. Besides all that, I was given some room to advance my knowledge in other stuff besides my main task such as learning the process from design until it eventually got sent out to the machinists. It was a great engineering learning experience for me.
EMD has gotten me interested in learning more about combustion. I am no expert in it but it's a really interesting dynamic that most people take for granted when our car engine runs.
Overall from talking to other interns, the environment is pretty laid back. I noticed some old GM corporate culture which I'm not so fond of (it used to be part of GM but separated in just a few years ago). Perhaps that's just part of big company's bureaucracy but I certainly can't speak for other companies.
