I worked as a Sales & Marketing Intern for the Port Charlotte Stone Crabs during the 2009 Summer. The Stone Crabs are a single ‘A’ affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. They essentially have a brand new stadium in which the Rays host their Spring Training each year. Beyond that, the internship was terrible. The internship is unpaid (which is to be expected of a Minor League team) and you will be treated like garbage. Before arriving, I was told by Adam English that he could help me find a part time job to help pay for rent. He never attempted to do anything for me. The first day I arrived, I did not receive a tour of the stadium and was stuck in the box office just to work on typing in database. Eventually, you work your way into cold calling people to try and sell them “group outings.” They do teach you a specific way of talking to potential clients on the phone and then send you to the box office to make your phone calls. There is no incentive to make calls other than to pass time and keep Adam English off your back. During home games you are treated like a Carnival worker in which you work the games (speed pitch, spin wheel). Also, you get to take surveys of fans and stand a fan assistance table in which people rarely visit unless it’s a top 10 night. The only joy I personally received from this internship was the free Quiznos we got at each home game and beating the full-timers in the softball game against the Interns. It wasn’t a huge surprise considering most of the full-timers were terrible athletes but apparently they never lose. I recently found out that even though we were treated like garbage by Adam English, he actually was promoted. He took over for Scoutt Moudry who was fired. Scott was one of the few good people who work for the team. If you want to accept this internship, go ahead, but I just want to let you know what you are getting yourself into. I will leave you with some of my favorite Adam English quotes.
• Called another intern a “f***ing retard” in front of another employee, out loud, on the concourse during a Stone Crabs game.
• Upon arriving to the stadium one day, I mentioned I was the first intern who arrived. I got a reply of "That's not saying much, that's like saying you're the smartest kid with down syndrome
• Upon an intern’s return from a day off, the following was said to the intern, out loud, in front of other interns: “I hope you enjoyed your day off, did you jack off twice?”
